According to Motor1, General Motors is recalling 70,768 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks due to an issue with the grille trim, which is the top piece of the grille assembly that sits adjacent to the hood.

Documentation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that the issue affects 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a chrome-trimmed grille. Specifically, failures can occur at all eight retaining clip locations that secure the grille trim.

If all the retaining clips break, the top piece of the grille may become detached. Prior to completely falling off, the grille piece is reported to exhibit loose behavior and make rattling noises.

Motor1 notes that only 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 models produced after the facelift in the same year are affected by the recall. Those with non-chrome grilles are not impacted.

NHTSA documents do not provide an exact reason for the failure of the retaining clips.

Initially, a GM employee notified the company of the potential issue after receiving a customer complaint. An investigation was opened in early 2024 but closed about a month later as no trend was identified.

In May 2024, several owners of 2022 GMC Sierra vehicles took to Reddit to share more accurate descriptions of the issue. GM subsequently launched a new investigation in December of the same year due to an increasing number of complaints.

According to Motor1, GM has recorded 1,225 field complaints from GMC Sierra owners during the period from April to December 2024. Four of these complaints alleged that accidents occurred due to the issue, but GM asserts that no injuries have been reported as a result.

GM states that it is working on a remedy for the issue but, as of now, no feasible solution has been found. The company’s documents indicate that the trim piece is a separate component, but many GMC Sierra 1500 owners assert on Reddit that purchasing an entire new grille assembly is the only way to replace it.

Dealers have been instructed to stop all business activities related to the affected 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks, whether new or used.
