Nissan is accelerating its product electrification strategy, with a focus on the third-generation e-Power hybrid powertrain. This system will be featured in the new X-Trail and the updated Qashqai, promising improved performance and smoother operation.

According to Nissan, the new e-Power system has been tested by several media outlets, including Autocar, ahead of its official European launch next year. The highlight of this version is the 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, fine-tuned from the old VC-Turbo base to optimize efficiency when used as a generator. The engine operates at a lower rev range, improving thermal efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and minimizing noise. Nissan claims that engine noise has been significantly reduced compared to the previous generation, by 5.6 dB.

The system also integrates a new electric motor, utilizing technology from the company’s electric vehicle range. This “5-in-1” design combines the motor, generator, inverter, turbocharger, and converter, resulting in a more compact size and improved responsiveness, despite a modest power output of 204 hp and 330 Nm, equivalent to the current X-Trail and a slight improvement over the Qashqai. In terms of fuel economy, the new engine reduces fuel costs by 15% compared to its predecessor.

The third-generation e-Power system will make its debut in the 2025 Qashqai, but it will only be a facelifted version of the current model. Meanwhile, the fifth-generation X-Trail is expected to be unveiled in 2026. The reason for the lack of a full redesign for the Qashqai is Nissan’s decision to delay plans for an electric version of the vehicle. The recent decline in global demand for electric vehicles has forced the company to adjust its strategy, shifting focus towards hybrid models.

With significant advancements in fuel efficiency and smoothness, the third-generation e-Power system not only helps Nissan overcome financial challenges but also demonstrates its commitment to developing green technology. Although not a fully electric vehicle, this hybrid system still meets the needs of modern consumers: it’s economical, environmentally friendly, and provides a pleasant driving experience. In the face of intense competition from rivals like Toyota and Honda, Nissan’s move promises to strengthen its position in the increasingly vibrant hybrid segment.
