Car accessories have long been a familiar “companion” for many car owners, not only enhancing convenience and ensuring safety but also expressing personal taste and style.

However, not all accessories are created equal, and some seemingly harmless additions can actually impact safety, performance, and even pose risks if used incorrectly.

Here are some types of accessories to consider before installation and use:

Rain Guards

Rain guards are commonly added or given as gifts when purchasing a car, mainly to prevent water from splashing when the windows are slightly open and to facilitate air circulation in the cabin. However, these accessories can obstruct the driver’s field of view, especially around the A-pillar, which is already a blind spot that can lead to accidents.

Additionally, rain guards increase wind resistance and generate a “humming” noise when driving at higher speeds, impacting the overall driving experience. Over time, the adhesive may come loose, and the plastic surface may fade, detracting from the car’s aesthetic appeal. Removing them can also be a hassle, leaving behind adhesive residue or scratches that turn this once-useful accessory into an annoying eyesore.

Steering Wheel Covers

Steering wheel covers are popular among car owners as they enhance the appearance of the interior while protecting the original steering wheel material from scratches and wear. Some covers also provide a better grip, making them a favorite among drivers.

However, if the wrong size or material is chosen, the cover may slip slightly during turns, which can be dangerous in emergency situations. Additionally, a thick cover can reduce the sensitivity of the steering wheel, impacting the precision of handling. If not cleaned regularly, the space between the steering wheel and the cover can accumulate dust and dirt, potentially harming the health of those in the car.

3D Floor Mats

Floor mats help keep the interior clean, facilitate easy cleaning, and enhance the overall appearance. However, if the mat is not the correct size, it can easily shift and slide under the pedals, obstructing their operation and potentially leading to a loss of control while driving.

Some inexpensive mats are made from recycled materials and may contain harmful chemicals that release strange odors, affecting the respiratory health of occupants, especially children or those with sensitivities.

When using floor mats, it is advisable to choose products with a clear origin, ensuring they fit snugly and have a secure fixation mechanism.

Wood or Plastic Bead Seat Covers

While once a trendy choice, experts now advise against using wood or plastic bead seat covers. Although they provide a sense of ventilation, these covers can cause occupants to slide slightly during sudden stops or sharp turns.

The lack of a secure feeling when seated directly impacts driving posture and responsiveness in unexpected situations. Moreover, these covers tend to be bulky, difficult to clean, and make the interior appear heavy and less elegant.

Dashboard Ornaments

Dashboard ornaments, such as wooden figurines, perfume bottles, or miniature models, can add a touch of personality and uniqueness to the cabin. However, if not securely fastened, these items can fall, roll, or even become projectiles in the event of a collision, causing injury to occupants.

More dangerously, if placed in the path of an airbag, these ornaments can turn into deadly projectiles when the airbag deploys, posing a serious threat to life. Additionally, they may obstruct the driver’s view and cause distractions while driving.
