Mazda Unveils the EZ-60, an All-Electric SUV, Following the Success of the EZ-6 Sedan in China
Changan-Mazda, the joint venture between Mazda and Changan, revealed the upcoming SUV on the Weibo social media platform, with an official launch expected later this month. The international version of the EZ-60 may be named the Mazda CX-6e and is rumored to be introduced globally by the end of this year.
From the Arata Concept to the EZ-60: A Journey to Shape a New SUV
The EZ-60 is the commercial realization of the Arata concept, which was initially mistaken for the design sketch of the next-generation Mazda CX-5. Contrary to early speculation, the EZ-60 targets the highly competitive mid-size all-electric SUV segment, a category that witnessed the failure of the Mazda MX-30, the brand’s first electric vehicle, which was discontinued within three years of its launch.
Signature Mazda Design with a Changan Platform
The EZ-60 embodies Mazda’s “Kodo – Soul of Motion” design philosophy, featuring a sharp front end with a wing-shaped daytime running light cluster and a prominent illuminated logo. However, the body and rear end exhibit a notable departure, with smooth and flowing curves reminiscent of the contemporary and simplistic design language often seen in Chinese electric vehicle brands. Notably, the vehicle features camera mirrors, a technology gaining popularity in the domestic market.
Interestingly, the EZ-60 is not solely a Mazda creation. Instead, its platform is provided by Changan, Mazda’s Chinese partner. In fact, this new SUV shares its technical foundation with the Deepal S07, a product from Changan’s Deepal sub-brand.
Two Powertrain Configurations, but a Potentially Shorter Range than the EZ-6
The Mazda EZ-60 is expected to offer two powertrain options: a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and an EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) that uses an internal combustion engine to recharge the battery. Due to its larger size and weight, the EZ-60’s range may be lower than that of the EZ-6 sedan, initially estimated at around 500 km per charge, compared to the sedan’s 600 km.
Localizing for Globalization: Mazda’s Strategic Approach
Although interior images have not been released, the EZ-60’s cabin is likely to mirror the EZ-6’s minimalist design, focusing on user experience and integrating modern connectivity features. Mazda’s decision to leverage local Chinese platforms for its new electric vehicles is strategic, allowing the company to rapidly expand into the electric vehicle market by partnering with experienced local players.
In addition to the EZ-6 and EZ-60, Mazda has confirmed plans to introduce two more electric vehicles using Chinese platforms between 2028 and 2030. This transitional period will buy Mazda time to develop and refine its proprietary all-electric platform, expected to launch from 2027 onwards.
The Mazda EZ-60 represents a strategic move in the company’s electrification efforts in the world’s largest automotive market – China. With its modern design, flexible powertrain options, and Changan’s support, the EZ-60 is poised to help Mazda regain its footing in the rapidly growing electric SUV segment. However, the reliance on a partner’s platform raises questions about brand positioning and maintaining Mazda’s unique identity in the long term.
