According to Carscoops, the recent news regarding Nissan is not the only bad thing happening to the Japanese automaker.

Just a few weeks after the merger talks between Honda and Nissan officially fell apart, a report emerged suggesting that the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander may not share a platform with Nissan.

In its current generation, the Mitsubishi Outlander shares a platform with the Nissan Rogue, which is part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance’s Common Module Family (CMF).

When the initial information about the possibility of Outlander being developed on the CMF platform surfaced, Mitsubishi leaders affirmed that the Japanese automaker was taking advantage of the alliance’s benefits while maintaining its unique brand identity.

However, all collaboration seems to end after just one generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander.

According to Auto News, Mitsubishi is considering using a modified version of its internal platform for the new Outlander. The Japanese automaker declined to comment on this information, but the aforementioned report came not long after Nissan sold back some of its shares to Mitsubishi to balance its finances.

Mitsubishi’s business situation in the US is not looking bright, with lackluster sales and disappointed dealers. Increasing costs, an aging product lineup, and the discontinuation of the Mirage – one of the brand’s most popular models – have also made things difficult for Mitsubishi dealers.

According to Carscoops, the Mitsubishi Outlander is likely to be supplemented with a mild-hybrid variant, in addition to the existing internal combustion engine and plug-in hybrid versions in the US. An off-road version called the Outlander Trail Edition is also expected to be launched in the market later this year.

For its part, Nissan, after its failed collaboration with Honda, is actively seeking new partners. Sources say that Foxconn is a potential new partner for Nissan in its plan to revive the company.
