The Yangwang U8 is currently one of the most talked-about vehicles in the Chinese market. With its large size, luxurious interior, and powerful electric drivetrain, this SUV seems to have it all. However, there will always be customers who desire even more from their vehicles.
To cater to these discerning individuals, BYD is set to unveil a new version of the U8 at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025, opening on April 23. This new model is named the Yangwang U8L, with the “L” speculated to stand for a longer wheelbase.
Ahead of its debut, BYD has released the first official images of the Yangwang U8L, yet the leading Chinese EV manufacturer has remained tight-lipped about any details regarding this new model.

From the scarce images released by the manufacturer, we can spot some noticeable changes in the Yangwang U8L compared to the standard model. The most apparent alteration is the extended rear door area, indicating a longer wheelbase and potentially more legroom for rear passengers.
Moreover, BYD has also lengthened the rear section of the U8L, suggesting the possibility of a third row of seats, similar to the Land Rover Defender 130. Other modifications include the removal of the external spare tire, likely for easier parking, and the introduction of massive eight-sided alloy wheels that resemble a shield.
The Yangwang U8L is expected to be the long-wheelbase version of the U8.
While official technical details are still under wraps, the Yangwang U8L is rumored to offer two interior configurations: a 6-seater or a 7-seater. The 6-seater version is expected to feature two captain’s chairs in the middle row, befitting its top-tier status.
In terms of powertrain, the Yangwang U8L is likely to retain the same configuration as the standard model. This means it will be equipped with four electric motors, producing a combined output of 1,196 horsepower and a staggering 1,280 Nm of torque. Powering these motors is a combination of a 49.05 kWh Blade LFP battery and a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine acting as a generator.
According to BYD, the standard U8 can travel up to 180 kilometers on pure electric power, while the total range reaches 1,000 kilometers on the CLTC cycle. The U8L, due to its increased weight, is expected to have slightly lower figures.
Like its standard counterpart, the Yangwang U8L will feature BYD’s DiSus-P hydraulic suspension system, enabling it to turn on the spot like a tank, drive on three wheels if one is punctured, and even float on water.
Pricing for the Yangwang U8L remains a mystery, but it’s safe to assume that it won’t come cheap.
