The affordable MPV segment has been dominated by the Mitsubishi Xpander and Toyota Veloz Cross for several years now. As of February, no new contenders have emerged to challenge their reign, making this vehicle class one of the market’s “boring” categories.
Xpander Remains the MPV King
With a budget of around VND 600-800 million, the Xpander is a popular choice for many consumers. In February, Mitsubishi sold 1,053 units of the Xpander, a 30% increase compared to the first month of the year. Cumulative sales for the first two months reached 1,861 units.
It’s no surprise that the Xpander consistently tops the sales charts in the affordable MVP segment. With a price range of VND 598-698 million, this MPV offers excellent value for money. It boasts a spacious interior and ample room, making it ideal for large families or taxi service businesses.

Trailing behind the Xpander is the Veloz Cross, which sold 364 units in February, a 67% increase compared to the previous month.
Once a strong competitor to the Xpander, the Veloz Cross has seen a significant drop in sales this year, falling below 500 units. However, the 364 units sold in February were enough to secure its second-place position.
Contrary to expectations, the Hyundai Stargazer, not the Kia Carens, took third place in terms of sales for February with 304 units sold. Throughout 2024, these two models have been alternating between third and fourth place in the market.

While most MPVs in the VND 600-800 million range experienced positive sales growth in the middle of the first quarter, the Honda BR-V witnessed a decline. In February, Honda sold 221 units of the BR-V, nearly a 40% decrease compared to the previous month.
The remaining contenders in the VND 700 million MPV segment, including the Suzuki XL7 Hybrid, Toyota Avanza Premio, and Hyundai Custin, all recorded positive sales growth in February, although not significantly. Their sales figures range from a few dozen to less than 200 units per month, which is not enough to pose a serious challenge in the sales race.
Can New MPV Entrants Create a Stir?
This year, the affordable MPV segment is expected to witness new competitions from upcoming models, led by the all-electric Limo Green from VinFast.
Even though the Limo Green is currently only available to taxi service providers through GSM, it has already generated a positive response from customers. Priced at VND 749 million, the Limo Green also comes with attractive incentives of up to VND 15 million during its initial booking period.

Another contender in the affordable MPV segment is the BYD M6. With a price tag of VND 756 million, the M6 offers a similar size to mid-sized MPVs like the Hyundai Custin or Toyota Innova Cross. However, its electric powertrain presents a challenge in terms of charging infrastructure.
According to Tri Thức – Znews, at the time of its launch, BYD had no plans to sell the M6 in large volumes to taxi companies in Vietnam. The BYD M6 vehicles used for taxi services are typically privately owned and do not have taxi signage. It remains to be seen if the Chinese electric carmaker has changed its strategy to tap into this potential market and boost its lackluster sales since entering Vietnam.

The MG G50 is also generating buzz in automotive forums, even though its official price has not been announced. Rumors suggest a price range of VND 550-650 million, which would make it a strong competitor to the reigning MPV king, the Xpander. MG’s strategy of offering aggressively low prices has proven successful in the past, and it could be a winning formula again in the affordable MPV segment, where price and size are key considerations for buyers.
