According to Carscoops, starting next month, anyone caught intentionally obscuring their license plate or simply allowing it to become unreadable due to dirt and grime will face a $50 fine from the New York City authorities.

This new set of rules targets speedsters and toll cheats who have been evading fees and traffic safety fines by preventing cameras from accurately capturing their license plate information.

Carscoops reports that last year, New York drivers collectively dodged over $100 million in fines due to this behavior. In 2023, the city also impounded 44 vehicles for cheating $1 million in bridge and tunnel tolls, including a Range Rover with $52,000 in toll violations.

The updated regulations in New York City require vehicles to display license plates at the front and back. These plates should be mounted between 305 and 1,220 mm from the ground, clearly visible, and unobstructed by any covering, including glass or plastic protection.

“The enforcement of traffic laws through surveillance cameras has proven to reduce speeding and lower pedestrian fatalities. However, this process is only effective if the license plates are legible. That’s why these strengthened regulations are crucial to holding violators accountable and protecting all New Yorkers,” affirmed Ydanis Rodriguez, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation.

In Vietnam, the penalty for similar behavior is significantly higher.

Specifically, point b of clause 8, Article 13 of Decree 168 stipulates a fine of 20-26 million VND for drivers of automobiles who fail to display a license plate, attach a license plate in the wrong position or manner, or use a license plate that is unclear or altered with materials other than paint or stickers.

This fine also applies to cases where the license plate is bent, covered, or altered in a way that changes the letters, numbers, or background color, or modifies the shape or size of the license plate.

Thus, compared to the fine of approximately $50 that New York City plans to implement next month, the penalty for intentionally obscuring a license plate on an automobile in Vietnam is about 20 times higher.
