Isuzu has recently unveiled its new electric pickup truck, the D-Max EV, marking a strategic move towards electrifying its medium-duty commercial vehicle segment.
The design of the D-Max EV remains largely unchanged from its current diesel-powered counterparts, with subtle tweaks to distinguish the electric variant.
Unlike the 2024 concept model that featured a closed grille, the production version retains the traditional open grille design. Key changes include the EV logo, charging port located where the fuel filler used to be, and the absence of an exhaust pipe.
The vehicle is painted in a distinctive Norwegian Blue color, complemented by 18-inch dark alloy wheels and black trim accents. The D-Max EV will be offered in two body styles: Extended Cab and Double Cab, both positioned in the premium segment.
Isuzu has equipped the D-Max EV with a four-wheel-drive system and twin electric motors, delivering a combined output of 188 horsepower and 325 Nm of torque. Compared to its diesel sibling, the electric truck offers an additional 26.8 horsepower but slightly less torque, reduced by 35 Nm.
D-Max EV can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 10.1 seconds and reach a top speed of over 129 km/h. It retains the Rough Terrain Mode, a signature feature of the D-Max diesel range.
One of the notable strengths of the D-Max EV is its towing and payload capabilities, which are on par with its diesel-powered rivals. It boasts a payload capacity of over 1,000 kg and a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The vehicle’s off-road prowess is maintained with a ground clearance of 210 mm and a water wading depth of 600 mm.
The D-Max EV‘s energy source is a 66.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering an estimated range of 263 km on the WLTP cycle. It supports 50 kW DC fast charging, enabling a quick one-hour charge from 20% to 80%.
In terms of structure, the D-Max EV is built on an evolved version of the D-Max internal combustion engine platform, optimized for electric propulsion. The suspension has been upgraded to a De-Dion system, enhancing ride comfort on urban and inter-city roads compared to the traditional leaf spring setup.
Isuzu will initially open pre-orders for the D-Max EV in the UK from the second half of 2025, with the first deliveries expected in March 2026. Following the UK launch, the electric pickup will be introduced in other European markets.
With competitors such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger still in the testing phase for their electric variants, the D-Max EV has taken a leap forward with a fully commercialized product. Its practical design, robust performance, and well-suited specifications pave the way for a new era of electric pickups in Europe.
