Volkswagen Malaysia has revealed plans to assemble hybrid and electric vehicles (BEV) for export to Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam.
This information was disclosed during the inauguration of the Audi Q7 assembly line in Malaysia on April 24.
While Volkswagen has not released product details, their presentation slides featured the ID.4 model alongside the flags of Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, suggesting that the ID.4 will be the first electric vehicle from Volkswagen to be assembled in Malaysia for export within the region.
The Volkswagen ID.4 was introduced in Malaysia in 2022 but has not yet been officially launched for sale. This model falls under the C-SUV segment with dimensions of 4,584 mm in length, 1,852 mm in width, and 1,634 mm in height. This segment is currently missing from Volkswagen Vietnam’s product portfolio, which mainly offers vehicles in the B or D segments and above.
Previously, a representative from Volkswagen Vietnam shared with the press that their first planned electric vehicle for distribution was the ID.6X, after the Viloran and Teramont X. However, the launch of the ID.6X at the Vietnam Motor Show (VMS) 2024 was postponed due to delays in importing the vehicle and its misalignment with the event’s green technology theme.
As of now, Volkswagen Vietnam has not provided further updates on their electric vehicle distribution roadmap. Experts believe that importing electric vehicles from Malaysia will allow Volkswagen to leverage the 0% tax rate within the ASEAN region and expedite product launches.
Compared to the ID.6X, the ID.4 is expected to have a stronger competitive edge due to its positioning in the C-SUV segment. However, the biggest challenge for Volkswagen and other electric vehicle manufacturers remains the lack of charging infrastructure, which is a significant hurdle for the development of electric vehicles in Vietnam.
