Denza, the premium brand of BYD, has achieved notable success with its large MPV, the D9, in the Indonesian market. As a result, the Denza D9 has become the best-selling Chinese vehicle in the largest automotive market in Southeast Asia shortly after its launch.

According to the Indonesia Automotive Industry Association, the top 10 best-selling Chinese electric vehicles in the country as of March 2025 are as follows:

  • BYD Denza D9: 1,587 units
  • BYD M6: 1,293 units
  • BYD Sealion 7: 1,182 units
  • Chery iCar 03 (J6): 987 units
  • Aion Hyptec: 886 units
  • Wuling Air EV: 471 units
  • Wuling Binguo EV: 468 units
  • BYD Atto 3: 388 units
  • Wuling Cloud EV: 266 units
  • BYD Seal: 234 units

In March 2025, the Denza D9 achieved a sales figure of 1,587 units, capturing a 2.2% market share in Indonesia. This performance propelled the BYD MPV to the top spot among Chinese vehicles in the country. When considering the entire segment, the D9 ranked 11th, just 13 units behind the Suzuki XL7 in 10th place.

This success is somewhat surprising, as the Denza D9 is not a budget-friendly option. Part of this achievement can be attributed to the popularity of MPVs among Indonesian consumers.

Officially launched in the Indonesian market in January 2025, the MPV, dubbed the “Toyota Alphard of China,” is priced at approximately 950 million Rupiah (around 1.5 billion VND). This price tag is about 90,000 RMB (315 million VND) higher than the Denza D9’s price in China.

The Denza D9 was introduced in Indonesia in mid-January 2025.

The launch of the Denza D9 came after BYD entered the Indonesian market in January 2024. At that time, the company introduced three new energy vehicles, namely the Dolphin, Seal, and Atto 3, in Indonesia before commencing deliveries in June 2024.

In the Chinese market, the Denza D9 is also dominating the MPV segment. In January 2025, this model led the MPV segment in the domestic market with 10,026 units sold. It maintained its strong performance in February 2025 with 7,213 units sold. By March 2025, the Denza D9 remained at the top, selling 9,326 units. Consequently, it was the best-selling MPV in China in the first quarter of 2025, with 25,598 units sold.

The Denza D9 is the “Sales King” in the MPV segment in China.

Market analysts attribute the success of the Denza D9 to its comprehensive package and minimal weaknesses. As a result, it has become a long-term favorite in the MPV segment since its launch in 2022.

The rapid success, both domestically and internationally, underscores BYD’s growing influence in the global electric vehicle industry. Simultaneously, it demonstrates the increasing acceptance of premium Chinese electric vehicles by Southeast Asian consumers.

In Vietnam, BYD showcased the Denza D9 at the VMS 2024 exhibition held in October last year. However, the company has not yet announced plans to distribute this large MPV in the Vietnamese market.
