Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has made the decision to temporarily halt car exports to the US for the month of April as a strategic move to navigate the new tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.
“While we work with our partners to adapt to the new trading conditions, a number of short-term actions will be implemented, including a temporary pause on deliveries in April as we develop mid and long-term plans,” The Times quoted JLR as saying.
The British automotive industry is significantly impacted by the new tariffs. According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the US is the second-largest importer of British cars after the European Union, accounting for nearly 20% of total exports.
As one of the largest manufacturers in the country, JLR sells approximately 400,000 vehicles annually, with 25% of those sales occurring in the US, including popular models like the Range Rover Sport and Defender. The US has also surpassed China as JLR’s largest market in 2024.
JLR’s current inventory levels in the US are sufficient to meet customer demand for the next 1-2 months. However, if the company fails to find a solution to mitigate the 25% tariff, models like the Range Rover, Defender, and Jaguar are likely to face price increases.
