Car accessories have long been a familiar “companion” to many car owners, not only enhancing convenience and ensuring safety but also expressing personal taste and style.
However, not all accessories are created equal, and some seemingly harmless additions can affect safety, performance, and even become hazardous if used incorrectly.
Here are some types of accessories to consider before installation and use:
Rain Guards
Rain guards are often added as an after-market accessory or given as a gift with a new car purchase. While they are intended to keep rain out when the windows are cracked and improve cabin ventilation, they can obstruct the driver’s view, especially around the A-pillar, which is already a blind spot that can cause accidents.
Additionally, rain guards increase wind resistance and create a loud “whooshing” noise at higher speeds, impacting the driving experience. Over time, the adhesive may come loose, leaving unsightly marks, and the plastic may fade, detracting from the car’s overall appearance.
Steering Wheel Covers
Steering wheel covers are popular as they enhance the aesthetics of the car interior and protect the original steering wheel material from wear and tear. Some covers also provide a better grip, which is favored by professional drivers.
However, if the cover is not the correct size or is made of slippery material, it can slide during sharp turns, creating a dangerous situation. The added thickness can also reduce the sensitivity of the steering wheel, impacting the precision of handling.
If not cleaned regularly, the space between the steering wheel and the cover can accumulate dust and dirt, potentially harming the health of the vehicle’s occupants.
3D Floor Mats
Floor mats help keep the interior clean, are easy to maintain, and add a stylish touch. However, if the mats are not the correct size, they can shift and slide under the pedals, interfering with their operation and potentially causing a loss of control while driving.
Inexpensive mats may be made from recycled materials and contain harmful chemicals that release odd smells, affecting the respiratory health of passengers, especially children and sensitive individuals.
When using floor mats, it is recommended to choose products with a clear origin, ensuring a perfect fit and secure fixation.
Wood or Plastic Bead Seat Covers
While once a trendy option, wood or plastic bead seat covers are now discouraged by experts. Although they provide a breathable option, they can cause the occupant to slide during sudden stops or sharp turns.
The insecure feeling while sitting directly impacts driving posture and responsiveness in unexpected situations. Additionally, these covers are often bulky, difficult to clean, and make the interior look cheap and heavy.
Dashboard Ornaments
Dashboard ornaments like wooden figurines, perfume bottles, or miniature models can add a touch of personality to the cabin. However, if they are not securely fastened, they can become dangerous projectiles in the event of a collision, causing injury to the occupants.
If placed in the path of an airbag, these ornaments can turn into deadly missiles when the airbag deploys, posing a serious threat to life. Furthermore, they may obstruct the driver’s view and cause distractions while driving.
