In April 2025, Vietnamese singer Duy Manh revealed on social media that he was suing Mercedes-Benz Vietnam over the burning of his luxury S-Class car. However, on May 21, 2025, the court announced that the singer had decided to withdraw the lawsuit just before the trial was about to begin.
The very next day, on May 22, 2025, Mercedes-Benz Vietnam officially released a statement to the press regarding the incident. According to the company, they had waited to share their perspective until after the court’s official results were announced, out of respect for the objective truth and the legal process. Their statement included the following key points:
- Mercedes-Benz Vietnam affirmed that they handled the incident with a high sense of responsibility and worked diligently to resolve the issue following proper procedures, with transparency, and in accordance with legal norms.
- Both Mercedes-Benz AG (Germany) and the insurance company’s assessment results indicated that the incident was caused by external factors and not due to any technical faults in the product. Based on this assessment, the insurance company accepted the customer’s request for compensation, fully covering the actual loss incurred in the incident as per the insurance terms and conditions.
- These assessment results not only confirmed the conclusion of the Criminal Science Institute – Ministry of Public Security but also provided detailed analyses and insights into the root cause of the incident.
Mercedes-Benz Vietnam added that in August 2024, Duy Manh had also withdrawn a previous lawsuit against an authorized dealer regarding the same incident. They expressed their disappointment that they wouldn’t have the opportunity to present a clear and detailed technical explanation of the incident’s root cause in court, which could have provided a more objective and accurate perspective for all involved parties and the public.
Mercedes-Benz Vietnam Issues Official Statement After Singer Duy Manh Withdraws Lawsuit
As previously reported, the lawsuit stemmed from the sudden burning of Duy Manh’s Mercedes-Benz S450 Luxury car on the evening of February 15, 2023. At the time, the car, worth VND 5 billion and purchased in 2020, was parked in the basement of an apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the singer, the car was turned off and locked at the time of the fire. As a result, the apartment security guard was unable to open the hood to put out the fire and had to use a crowbar to force it open and spray water on the flames.
The apartment management then called the police, who sealed the car at a police impound lot in Thu Duc City after extinguishing the blaze. A month later, the police determined that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.
Following the police conclusion, the insurance company compensated Duy Manh VND 2.9 billion. However, when Mercedes-Benz Vietnam conducted their assessment, they attributed the fire to rodents, citing the presence of mouse droppings and garbage in the vehicle. Dissatisfied with this conclusion, Duy Manh decided to take legal action.
