Toyota unveiled the new generation of the Crown in Japan in 2022, offering four distinct models: Crossover, Sedan, Sport, and Estate. Among these, the highly anticipated Toyota Crown Sedan arrived in dealerships towards the end of 2023.

Now, over a year later, Toyota has taken the wraps off two special editions of this premium sedan, boasting unique designs and luxurious touches. While the changes to these special editions are not drastic, they are significant enough to mark an important milestone and keep the Toyota Crown Sedan feeling fresh and appealing.

One of the two special editions celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Toyota Crown lineage. Aptly named The 70th, this edition boasts a distinctive two-tone exterior and commemorative details.

Toyota Crown Special Edition Z “The 70th” – A Stylish Tribute

The Toyota Crown Special Edition Z “The 70th” captivates with its upper body painted in Precious Metal grey, elegantly complemented by Precious White Pearl or Precious Black Pearl on the lower half. This combination exudes sophistication, reminiscent of the luxurious Mercedes-Maybach line, but without the hefty price tag.

Two Striking Color Combinations

Enhancing its visual appeal, the Toyota Crown Special Edition Z “The 70th” rides on 20-inch matte black alloy wheels. Adorning the sides are optional grey decals with the “70th” lettering, a subtle yet proud nod to its heritage.

Step inside, and you’ll find a commemorative emblem accompanied by a laser-engraved Crown logo on the center console and a crystal-like gear knob. This logo is also projected onto the ground when the doors are opened, and it graces the recycled leather bag for the owner’s manual and smart key. The interior is swathed in Black Lustre leather with matching woodgrain accents, exuding elegance and refinement.

The second special edition, named the Toyota Crown Special Edition Z Limited Matte Metal, embraces a modern and minimalist aesthetic with a striking matte grey paint job. This color option has previously appeared on other Toyota Crown models, including the Crossover and Sport variants.

Toyota Crown Special Edition Z Limited Matte Metal: Understated Sophistication

This edition forgoes the commemorative theme and instead focuses on a sleek, industrial design. The exterior is finished in a deep matte grey with a special easy-maintenance coating. Like the “The 70th” edition, it rides on 20-inch matte black wheels and features a Black Lustre interior, but without the crystal-like gear knob. Dealer options include headrest cushions and a panoramic sunroof.

Matte Grey Finish: A Bold Statement

A Sleek and Modern Interior

Both special editions offer a choice of two powertrains. The first is a self-charging hybrid system featuring a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two electric motors. This setup delivers an impressive fuel economy of approximately 18 km/l (around 5.5 l/100 km).

The second powertrain option is a fuel-cell setup borrowed from the Toyota Mirai. This FCEV configuration includes a fuel cell stack, three hydrogen tanks, a powerful electric motor producing 179 hp and 300 Nm of torque, and a 4 Ah lithium-ion battery. With this setup, the vehicle can travel approximately 820 km on a single fill.

The Toyota Crown Special Edition Z “The 70th” is priced between 7,550,000 and 8,550,000 Yen in Japan (approximately $54,000 to $61,000). The Matte Metal edition carries a slightly higher price tag, ranging from 8,100,000 to 9,100,000 Yen (around $58,000 to $65,000). Both special editions are exclusive to the Japanese market.
