Amid the challenges faced by the global automotive industry due to trade barriers and import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, Nissan, a brand that has struggled in recent years, sees an opportunity to thrive.

“We are fortunate to have a strong manufacturing presence right here in the US,” shared Vinay Shahani, Director of Marketing for Nissan USA, in an interview with Motor1.

While other automakers are faced with the dilemma of increasing prices or sacrificing business costs due to rising import tariffs, Nissan has an advantage with its localized production and affordable vehicle lineup.

As competitors like Toyota and Honda focus on premium hybrid vehicles, Nissan is taking a different approach by targeting the mass market. They are catering to customers who are facing escalating car prices and seeking more affordable options.

Uniquely, Nissan offers six models priced below $30,000 in the US market, with the Versa starting below $20,000—one of the most competitively priced vehicles in the country.

Nissan’s vehicles are also produced in US-based factories in Smyrna, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi, exempting them from the new import tariffs implemented by the Trump administration in April.

In the coming year, Nissan plans to launch a range of new models, including the Rogue and Sentra, a CUV variant of the Leaf, and the new Xterra with an off-road SUV style.

“We are not only maintaining low prices but also comprehensively upgrading our new models without increasing costs,” asserted Shahani.

Nissan aims to capitalize on the challenges faced by its competitors and reposition its brand, bringing back the trend of affordable automobiles to the US. The company hopes to emulate the success of its predecessor, Datsun, during the 1973 fuel crisis.
