A brief glimpse of the new Prado in mid-2023 sparked enthusiastic discussions within the off-road community about Toyota’s upcoming small SUV, often referred to as the Land Cruiser mini or FJ Cruiser.
Recently, the Land Cruiser mini has once again captured attention with the emergence of alleged pre-production design patent drawings in the database of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
According to the leaked drawings, the new SUV features a compact design with a 5-door configuration and a boxy, rugged appearance—a hallmark of true off-road vehicles. It sports classic round headlights combined with prominent wheel arches, thick C-pillars, and an almost vertical rear end with a large spare tire, exuding a bold and adventurous character.
Details such as black plastic cladding on the front bumper, wheel arches, and side steps emphasize the vehicle’s off-road capabilities. While the drawings show standard wheels, it’s easy to envision a commercial version equipped with specialized off-road tires and impressive ground clearance.
The overall design is seen as an evolution of the award-winning Toyota Compact Cruiser EV concept, but the pre-production version is expected to be significantly larger. According to sources in Japan, the vehicle’s overall length will be around 4,500 mm, placing it in the C-SUV segment alongside models like the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Bronco Sport.
Unlike the Land Cruiser and Prado, which utilize the sophisticated TNGA-F platform, the Land Cruiser FJ will be based on the IMV-0 platform, currently employed by the Hilux Champ pickup truck in Thailand. This type of ladder frame chassis is simpler yet highly durable and efficient for off-road performance.
Toyota is also preparing to use this platform for the next-generation Hilux and Fortuner, underscoring its importance in the company’s global product strategy. Compared to rivals with unibody constructions, such as the Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ offers superior potential for chassis stability, strength, and agility in challenging terrain.
While Toyota has not officially confirmed the specifications, the small “off-road warrior” is likely to feature traditional combustion engine options, catering to practicality and target markets. The expected choices include:
A 2.7L Dual VVT-i gasoline engine, a familiar powerplant in many Toyota models.
A 2.4L or 2.8L GD-series turbocharged diesel engine, renowned for its durability and high torque output, making it especially suitable for off-road conditions.
Regardless of the engine choice, Toyota will almost certainly offer a standard four-wheel-drive (4WD) system for this vehicle.
According to plans, Toyota may unveil this model in early 2026. In an era where many SUVs prioritize urban comfort, the arrival of a compact SUV with a ladder frame chassis and a genuine off-road focus is a refreshing change.
The Land Cruiser FJ is expected to appeal to young, adventurous customers who desire the Land Cruiser’s off-road capabilities but in a smaller, more affordable package. With a length of 4.5 meters and a 5-door design, this SUV also offers the versatility needed for daily urban use.
