The million-dollar Mercedes-AMG One hypercar has recently been involved in yet another serious fire incident in Germany.
The event has once again raised concerns about the stability of the F1-inspired hybrid system that Mercedes-AMG is pursuing.
The incident occurred recently in the city of Oldenburg, Germany, when a Mercedes-AMG One suddenly burst into flames. Although the fire department arrived quickly and controlled the blaze, the intense fire left the supercar burnt to its frame. Notably, even after the fire was extinguished, the car had to be further treated with specialized fire-resistant foam to prevent re-ignition from the hybrid system’s battery.
It is known that the car involved in the accident was painted in the extremely rare Emerald Green color, one of the colors that has only appeared on Mercedes-Benz’s luxury car lines.
The car also stood out with its active aerodynamics package, which includes three driving modes: Highway, Track, and Race DRS, directly inspired by F1 aerodynamic mechanisms. Additionally, the exterior is finished in carbon fiber, combined with 9-spoke magnesium alloy wheels painted in copper, creating a unique and unmistakable appearance.
Unlike most AMG One models that feature a purely sports-oriented interior, the car involved in the incident had a customized cabin with Beige leather and Alcantara upholstery, creating a sense of luxury rarely seen in the hypercar world.
The Mercedes-AMG One, first introduced as Project One in 2017, was finally commercialized after years of complex development. This is Mercedes-AMG’s ambitious project to realize the dream of bringing F1 technology to commercial vehicles.
At the heart of this hypercar is a 1.6L V6 turbocharged engine, the same type used in F1 cars and retuned for legal use on public roads. The internal combustion engine produces 574 horsepower and is combined with four electric motors located at the crankshaft, turbocharger, and rear axle, delivering a combined output of 1,063 horsepower. The car is also equipped with an 8.4 kWh battery, allowing for an all-electric range of 11.4 miles.
With the RACE START mode, the Mercedes-AMG One can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, rivaling the top hypercars in the world today.
This is not the first time the Mercedes-AMG One has been involved in a fire-related incident. In March 2023, another AMG One caught fire while being transported to a customer. Up to now, Mercedes-Benz has not officially announced the cause of this incident, and the new fire in Germany will likely further challenge the German automaker in reassuring customers about the safety of its complex hybrid system.
