Volvo Reveals More Details on its Upcoming Mid-Size Electric SUV, the EX60, Set to Launch in 2026

The vehicle is built on the all-new SPA3 platform and is positioned as a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz GLC EV and BMW iX3.

A key highlight of the Volvo EX60 is its adaptive seatbelt system, a world-first technology designed to enhance occupant protection in collision scenarios. According to Volvo, this system can be customized based on individual passenger characteristics and specific accident conditions.

Unlike traditional seatbelts that offer a fixed level of tension, the EX60’s adaptive seatbelts use data from a range of internal and external sensors, including accelerometers, radar, and cameras, to analyze collision scenarios in real-time. The system also takes into account personal factors such as height, weight, body shape, and seating posture, adjusting the belt load accordingly to reduce injuries.

For instance, in a severe collision, a taller and larger occupant would experience a higher belt load to restrict head movement. Conversely, for smaller occupants in less severe crashes, the belt tension would be reduced to prevent potential injuries like rib fractures.

Ã…sa Haglund, Director of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, commented, “The adaptive seatbelt system is a significant milestone in Volvo’s safety innovation journey. It showcases our utilization of real-time data to protect lives and marks a huge step forward from the three-point seatbelt invented by Volvo in 1959, a technology that has saved over a million lives globally.”

Volvo also mentioned that the system will be further enhanced through wireless software updates (OTA). This will enable continuous improvements in the system’s performance, ensuring enhanced protection for occupants over time.

While Volvo has not yet disclosed detailed specifications or pricing for the EX60, the vehicle is expected to play a crucial role in the company’s comprehensive electrification strategy post-2025. With its safety technology breakthrough, the EX60 is poised to continue Volvo’s tradition of setting new standards for the global automotive industry.
