Ford recently released a video of its prototype Ranger Super Duty being tested at the You Yangs Proving Ground in Australia, and it’s definitely turning heads.

What’s truly remarkable is that the vehicle is entirely operated by specialized robots, with no human driver present.

The use of robot test drivers is a necessity, as per Ford representatives, as no human could endure the continuous 24/7 testing regimen of intense “torture” at the Silver Creek track – renowned for its over 300 randomly placed obstacles simulating the harshest real-world terrain conditions.

The Ranger Super Duty prototype in the test is loaded to its maximum capacity of 4,500 kg. Each run subjects the suspension to over 2,000 intense vibrations, allowing engineers to comprehensively assess the durability of the body structure, engine mounts, door hinges, and other vital mechanical components.

Scheduled for release in 2026, the Ford Ranger Super Duty is positioned as the most powerful and durable version in the Ranger’s history. This pickup truck has been engineered with a host of significant technical and design upgrades to meet the most demanding operating conditions.

Firstly, the frame has been reinforced, coupled with increased ground clearance and a wider axle, significantly improving load-bearing capacity and stability when traversing rugged terrain. The vehicle is fitted with large 33-inch all-terrain tires, complemented by extended fender flares and a rugged front bumper, enhancing both its muscular appearance and genuine off-road capabilities.

Specialized equipment, such as a raised air intake (snorkel), enables the vehicle to operate safely in deep water conditions, and a differential lock for both the front and rear axles optimizes traction on slippery or muddy terrain.

The Ranger Super Duty boasts a larger fuel tank, along with an intelligent load-balancing system, aiding drivers in effectively monitoring and adjusting heavy loads.

Under the hood, a refined 3.0L diesel V6 engine not only meets stringent emission standards for heavy-duty trucks but also boosts the towing capacity to an impressive near-10-ton figure within the mid-size pickup segment.

Despite the anticipation surrounding the Ranger Super Duty, Ford has confirmed that it will not be available in the North American market, at least initially. Instead, the vehicle is specifically tailored for international markets where customers require a pickup that can assume some of the roles of a heavy-duty truck while retaining the agility characteristic of the Ranger lineup.

With the Ranger Super Duty, Ford underscores its strategic investment in the global mid-size pickup segment. Amidst the growing demand for specialized transportation, enhancing the structure and optimizing the towing, payload, and harsh operating conditions become pivotal factors for success in markets that prioritize not just design but also real-world performance.
