As Mazda’s sales pillar in the C-segment CUV/SUV category, the CX-5 is gearing up for its new generation with significant changes.

The exterior design of the new Mazda CX-5 has just been unexpectedly leaked, revealing a modern and distinct look.

The leaked image, believed to be of the new Mazda CX-5, is attracting attention for its resemblance to previously spotted test prototypes. The image’s reliability is further bolstered by the car’s design, which evokes the Mazda Arata Concept and the recently unveiled mid-size electric SUV, EZ-60.

While retaining the characteristic body proportions and familiar window frame shape of the current CX-5, the new generation features a completely refreshed body. The most notable change is the sleek, curved design of the headlights, which seamlessly connect to the grille, reminiscent of the style seen on the Mercedes-Benz EQC. Meanwhile, the central grille maintains Mazda’s distinctive design but is refreshed with a more intricate pattern and slender chrome trim, imparting a more modern and premium feel.

The front bumper has also been redesigned to be more angular and sporty, with a large central air intake creating a striking accent. The faux air vents on the sides, a controversial feature on the current version, are no longer present. Black plastic cladding surrounds the wheel arches, adding to the robust appearance. On higher-end trims, this detail is likely to be body-colored to enhance the aesthetic appeal.

Despite belonging to Mazda’s SUV lineup, the CX-5 does not directly borrow design cues from larger models like the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, or CX-90. Similarly, it remains distinct from the CX-50, a fellow SUV in the same segment but with a more off-road-oriented character exclusively offered in North America.

Through this approach, Mazda demonstrates its careful product positioning, allowing the CX-5 to maintain its unique identity while embracing contemporary design principles.

The vehicle’s overall dimensions are expected to increase slightly, offering more spaciousness and practicality, especially appealing to families.

Although there are no leaked images of the interior, multiple sources confirm that Mazda will continue to enhance the CX-5’s cabin with influences from its higher-end models. Expected highlights include a larger infotainment screen, upgraded materials, and a new interface design similar to the flagship Mazda CX-90 SUV.

A notable change is Mazda’s confirmation that the new Mazda CX-5 will feature a PHEV powertrain, combining the new SkyActiv-Z gasoline engine with an electric motor. However, the SkyActiv-Z engine won’t be available until late 2027. In the initial phase, the hybrid variants of the new CX-5 will utilize the current powertrain before transitioning to the new technology.

Mazda has not yet made any official statements regarding the leaked design, but it is likely that the new generation CX-5 will be introduced in the coming weeks. This could be one of the key models initiating a significant transformation for Mazda, encompassing not just design but also technology and electrification strategies.
