Once considered a “super rookie,” Mitsubishi Xforce made frequent appearances in the best-selling car lists throughout 2024, despite being a newcomer to the market. However, it now seems to be facing a challenging phase in Vietnam.
Mitsubishi Xforce’s sales have been erratic in the first four months of the year, causing it to fall behind its competitor, Toyota Yaris Cross. Even the Hyundai Creta, a similarly positioned imported SUV, has been gradually catching up in sales.
Xforce’s Decline and Creta’s Growth
According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), Mitsubishi Xforce sold 612 units in Vietnam in April, a decrease of over 300 units compared to its previous sales performance.
This sales decline has pushed Mitsubishi Xforce out of the top-selling B-segment SUVs. When including electric cars, the VinFast VF 6 is the best-selling urban SUV with 1,763 units sold. The Toyota Yaris Cross follows closely with 1,080 units delivered to Vietnamese customers, while the Hyundai Creta sold 1,059 units.

Along with the Mitsubishi Xforce, other B-segment SUVs that failed to reach the 1,000-unit sales mark in April include the Toyota Corolla Cross (572 units), Honda HR-V (448 units), Kia Seltos (436 units), Mazda CX-3 (292 units), and the larger Mazda CX-30 (163 units).
Cumulative sales from the beginning of the year show that the VinFast VF 6 temporarily leads the B/B+ SUV segment with 5,914 units sold in the first four months. The Toyota Yaris Cross follows closely with 3,197 units delivered, creating a significant gap with the Mitsubishi Xforce, which sold 2,545 units during the same period.
Moreover, the Hyundai Creta, which made a strong impression in the Vietnamese market last year, is now threatening to overtake the Mitsubishi Xforce in sales. So far this year, Vietnamese customers have purchased a total of 2,269 Hyundai Creta units.
The Need for an Electric Push?
Parallel to the erratic sales performance of the Mitsubishi Xforce is the accelerating growth of the VinFast VF 6, the segment’s sole electric representative. This reality indicates that the market is facing pressure from electric vehicles.
Domestic competitors such as the Toyota Yaris Cross and Toyota Corolla Cross already offer hybrid versions. The Subaru Crosstrek, introduced last year, also features a gasoline-electric hybrid system, and the Haval Jolion was launched as a hybrid model. Honda has recently added a hybrid variant to the HR-V lineup, utilizing the same e:HEV system found in the Civic and CR-V. While not as prominent, the Nissan Kicks and MG4 EV are also electric options available in the B-SUV segment.

Mitsubishi, on the other hand, has not yet introduced any hybrid variants of the Xforce or any other models in its Vietnamese lineup. This absence may soon change, as the Xforce HEV has already been unveiled to customers in neighboring Thailand at the BIMS 2025 exhibition held in March in Bangkok.
The entry of new Chinese models, such as the Omoda C5 and Geely Coolray, with their competitive pricing, is also believed to contribute to the decline in Mitsubishi Xforce’s sales performance.
For instance, the Omoda C5, priced at a discounted rate of 499 million VND for the Luxury trim, is the most affordable option in the B-SUV segment. Geely Coolray, with three trim levels priced between 538 and 628 million VND, also offers exceptional value for money within the segment.

The Mitsubishi Xforce was launched in March 2024, and within just two months, it sold an impressive 2,140 units. In comparison, its cumulative sales for the first four months of this year stand at 2,545 units, indicating a noticeable slowdown.
Even though we are only halfway through May, it appears that the “honeymoon phase” for the Mitsubishi Xforce in Vietnam may be coming to an end. It will be a significant challenge for the Xforce to regain its impressive sales performance from last year, especially with strong competitors like the VF 6, Yaris Cross, and Creta continuing to perform well in the market.
In an attempt to boost sales, Mitsubishi is offering a 50% discount on registration fees for almost all Xforce variants, excluding the GLX trim. The value of this promotion ranges from 32 to 35.5 million VND, depending on the vehicle’s trim level and exterior color combination.

Toyota is also providing similar incentives for the Yaris Cross and Corolla Cross, with discounts of 33-38 million VND and 41-46 million VND, respectively. Kia is offering a maximum discount of 35 million VND for the Seltos, while TC Motor is providing a 100% registration fee discount for three Hyundai Creta variants.
VinFast, on the other hand, is offering a combination of incentives for the VF 6 in May, including a 15 million VND discount and 20 million VND worth of insurance for two years.
