Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is an essential safety feature in modern automobiles, designed to monitor tire pressure and alert drivers to any abnormalities. TPMS comes in two main varieties: direct TPMS (dTPMS) and indirect TPMS (iTPMS).
Luxury vehicles and high-end models often come equipped with dTPMS as a standard feature. For example, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300 AMG, Toyota Corolla Cross HEV, Hyundai Tucson Turbo, and Kia Seltos Luxury all feature dTPMS. In contrast, iTPMS is more commonly found in economical and lower-priced vehicles such as the Toyota Vios MT, Hyundai Grand i10, Kia Morning, and Honda City G.
How Does TPMS Work?
Direct TPMS utilizes sensors installed within each tire to closely monitor and measure pressure and temperature. This data is then transmitted to the central display. If the pressure drops below safe levels (by more than 25% of the standard threshold), the system activates warning lights and indicators on the dashboard.
On the other hand, indirect TPMS relies on sensors in the ABS system to measure wheel speed. If a tire is underinflated, affecting its rotational speed, the ABS system detects this anomaly and triggers a warning.
TPMS plays a crucial role in road safety by helping drivers identify underinflated tires, preventing blowouts and improving control at high speeds. Properly inflated tires also enhance road grip and fuel efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by 2-5%.
Benefits and Limitations
While TPMS offers significant advantages, it also has some limitations. dTPMS, for instance, may incur higher repair and replacement costs due to the intricate installation and sophisticated sensors. Additionally, the sensors within the tires are susceptible to damage if tires are not changed properly.
Conversely, iTPMS may lack precision in pinpointing the exact location of a problematic tire in the event of underinflation. Nonetheless, TPMS accessories can be retrofitted to existing vehicles, providing drivers with valuable tire information and early warning, thus mitigating potential hazards.
