Suzuki has unveiled its latest model, the Fronx, in the Indonesian market in late May. According to sources, the car is expected to be launched in Vietnam later this year, competing with established names in the same segment such as the Toyota Raize, Kia Sonet, and VinFast VF 5.
A Unique Style
The Fronx is designed with a unique SUV-coupe crossover style, setting it apart from other vehicles currently available in Vietnam. Its dimensions are 3,995 x 1,765 x 1,550 mm in length, width, and height, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2,520 mm.
Thus, the Fronx is smaller than the Kia Sonet (4,120 x 1,790 x 1,642 mm) and Toyota Raize (4,030 x 1,710 x 1,605 mm), and similar in size to the Hyundai Venue (3,995 x 1,770 x 1,645 mm).
Notable exterior features include sporty dark-colored alloy wheels, roof rails, and LED headlights with auto on/off function. The top-spec trim also offers a heads-up display and the Suzuki Safety Support suite.
Under the hood, the Fronx is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, producing 101 horsepower and 135 Nm of torque. Suzuki offers a mild hybrid variant in the SGX and GX trims, combining the engine with an electric motor and a 6 Ah Lithium-ion battery, adding 3.1 horsepower and 60 Nm.

As such, the mild hybrid powertrain is similar to the one found in the current XL7 Hybrid sold in Vietnam. Based on our experience with the XL7 Hybrid, Suzuki’s mild hybrid system doesn’t offer a significant improvement in performance or fuel efficiency.
Both the conventional and mild hybrid versions of the Fronx lack a standout feature to differentiate themselves.
However, compared to its rivals, the Fronx is the first SUV in the segment to offer a hybrid powertrain. This could appeal to customers who prioritize low operating costs, brand loyalty, or fuel efficiency.
Pricing Will Determine Its Success
While the Fronx’s mild hybrid system and unique coupe-style design may bring a fresh perspective to the small SUV segment, it is unlikely to be a game-changer that will significantly boost Suzuki’s sales in Vietnam.
Vietnamese car buyers tend to favor small SUVs with a tall and spacious design. Best-sellers in this price range, such as the VF 5 and Kia Sonet, offer a rugged SUV look with optimized interior space, despite their compact size.
In contrast, the Fronx’s sporty profile comes at the cost of a narrower and lower second-row seat and a smaller cargo area.

In the small SUV segment, the VinFast VF 5 dominates with average monthly sales of 3,600 units. As the only all-electric model in the segment, it has enjoyed a unique position in the market, along with attractive pricing and charging support, resulting in low operating costs.
Upon its launch in Vietnam, the Fronx will compete with conventional gasoline-powered SUVs such as the Toyota Raize, Kia Sonet, and Hyundai Venue. Currently, the Kia Sonet leads this group with average monthly sales of 425 units, followed by the Toyota Raize (277 units) and Hyundai Venue (215 units).
Apart from the VF 5, other small SUVs also face challenges from larger and more affordable SUVs in the B-segment, such as the Mitsubishi Xforce, Geely Coolray, and Kia Seltos.
After-sales service and the dealership network are also crucial factors for the Fronx’s success in Vietnam. Currently, Suzuki has 34 dealerships across the country, which is significantly fewer than VinFast (132), Toyota (91), Hyundai (127), and Kia (115).

Ultimately, the success of a car model in Vietnam heavily depends on its pricing strategy.
In Indonesia, the Suzuki Fronx is priced between 259 and 320 million Rupiah, or approximately $15,924 to $19,674. In Vietnam, small SUVs typically compete in the price range of VND 500 to 600 million, for example, the Kia Sonet (VND 539-624 million), Toyota Raize (VND 510 million), Hyundai Venue (VND 499-539 million), and VinFast VF 5 (VND 529 million).
With a competitive pricing strategy between VND 499 and 539 million, the Fronx could potentially achieve average monthly sales of 100 to 300 units. If Suzuki decides to price it more aggressively between VND 450 and 499 million, the Fronx could even exceed 400 monthly sales.
However, at this point, it is difficult to predict its exact impact on the market. What is certain is that the Fronx is unlikely to “rule” the small SUV segment but will rather offer a more affordable and unique alternative to its rivals, similar to how the XL7 hybrid and Ertiga have positioned themselves in the MPV segment.
