A rare opportunity has emerged for off-road enthusiasts in Vietnam with the recent listing of the country’s only Hummer H1 Alpha pickup truck on the used car market.
The Hummer H1 is the civilian version of the military M998 Humvee, developed by AM General in the early 1980s. Initially designed for the US military, a commercial version, the H1, was introduced in 1992 after the Gulf War. The H1 was assembled in Mishawaka, Indiana, with production continuing until 2006, while the military Humvee remained in production until 2018.
The H1 comes in various body styles, including soft top, wagon, and 4-door pickup. Rarer variants such as the 2-door pickup and the 4-door slant back are also available, derived from the military design.
In Vietnam, the H1 Alpha pickup is the only one of its kind and was previously owned by a car enthusiast group in Hanoi, who also owned a uniquely modified Hummer H2. After a period of seclusion, the vehicle has re-emerged on the used car market.
The H1 Alpha features a bold, black exterior with a boxy, muscular design reminiscent of its military heritage. It sits on 17-inch wheels wrapped in large 395/135 off-road tires, providing stable performance on challenging terrain. A row of LED auxiliary lights on the roof enhances visibility during night drives or in low-light conditions.
Notably, the truck lacks the typical side steps found on large pickups, a deliberate omission by the previous owner to maximize ground clearance and maintain its off-road capabilities. With a ground clearance of 406 mm and a water-wading depth of 762 mm, the Hummer H1 Alpha is considered one of the best off-road pickup trucks ever produced.
Powering the H1 Alpha is a 6.6L Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine that produces 300 horsepower and an impressive 705 Nm of torque. A 5-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the wheels, ensuring agile performance in diverse environments, from urban settings to rugged mountains, deserts, and flooded areas.
The emergence of the Hummer H1 Alpha on the used car market is a rare event for collectors in Vietnam. While the exact price is not disclosed, rumors suggest that an H1 Alpha in good condition could fetch a price in the billions, reflecting its technical prowess, historical significance, and rarity.
