A recent study has revealed that the all-electric Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback maintains stable performance over an extended period.

German automotive organization ADAC conducted a four-year test on the ID.3 Pro S Tour version. The test showed that the car’s range remained almost unchanged after 172,000 km of real-world driving.

At the beginning of the test, the Volkswagen ID.3, equipped with a 77 kWh battery, achieved a range of 438 km on a full charge, slightly lower than the 525 km WLTP standard claimed by the manufacturer.

After four years and over 172,000 km on the odometer, the car still delivered a real-world range of 425 km, a loss of just 13 km or less than 3%.

During the test, the ADAC team frequently charged the battery to 100% and left the car parked overnight with a full charge. This practice is not considered optimal by many car manufacturers, including Volkswagen.

However, periodic checks showed that the battery health decreased to 96% after 21,800 km, further dropping to 94% at 84,300 km, and stabilizing at 91% around 169,700 km.

Volkswagen currently offers a battery warranty for electric vehicles if the usable capacity drops below 70%. The ID.3 in the test still falls within the safe range and does not qualify for battery warranty.

In addition to range retention, the ID.3’s energy consumption efficiency improved over time thanks to software updates.

Initially, the energy consumption was 20 kWh/100 km, and by the end of the test, it had decreased to 18.3 kWh/100 km—an improvement of nearly 9%.

This improvement is attributed to Volkswagen’s software updates, which optimize energy management and mitigate range degradation commonly seen in used electric vehicles.

The software updates also increased the ID.3’s maximum charging power from 125 kW to 160 kW, reducing charging time from 10% to 80% battery capacity by approximately two minutes.

Carscoops emphasizes that, just like smartphones, software updates play a crucial role in maintaining the performance and stability of electric vehicles. Delaying or skipping updates may result in missing out on significant optimizations, particularly in battery management and fast charging.

ADAC’s long-term test reinforces the notion that with proper use, maintenance, and periodic software updates, electric vehicle battery life can exceed expectations while maintaining near-original performance.
