According to Carscoops, Phoenix police (Arizona, USA) have busted a car theft ring in the area, seizing 29 luxury vehicles and arresting three suspects. The operation, dubbed “Operation Escalading Switch”, was carried out by the Vehicle Theft Task Force and the Arizona Police Department.
Among the recovered vehicles were notable makes such as Chevrolet Corvette, Rolls-Royce Ghost, Aston Martin DBX, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The total value of the stolen cars amounted to $2.5 million.
A representative from the Arizona Vehicle Theft Task Force shared with the media the intricate process of the theft carried out by this sophisticated gang. Specifically, the three suspects worked together to steal high-value vehicles in the area. One of them had access to internal records of the Arizona Department of Transportation (DMV), enabling them to alter vehicle information and disguise the stolen cars as legally owned.
The gang then posted the newly “VIN-switched” cars on Turo, a car rental platform in Arizona, to find prospective renters. In some cases, cars stolen just a week ago were already refurbished, given new identities, and listed on Turo for rental purposes.
