Electric vehicle sales may have skyrocketed in the past few years, but 2025 is predicted to be a more complex year for this segment. Despite continuous innovations, fresh designs, and constant refinements, demand seems to be cooling off.
This trend is particularly evident for Kia, whose EV9 and EV6 models are struggling to keep up with last year’s sales figures.
K5 and Carnival Shoulder Kia’s Sales Amid a Slump in Electric Vehicles
The automaker recently released its July sales figures, revealing that it sold 1,737 EV9s and only 1,290 EV6s.
In comparison, during the same month last year, their sales figures were 1,815 and 1,545, respectively. Certainly, these numbers aren’t promising for a fantastic crossover, but the EV9’s figures could be an anomaly. Except that the annual total sales tell a different story.
So far this year, Kia has sold 7,165 EV6s. This is 5,323 fewer than the sales figure after July 2024. In other words, sales have dropped by 42.6%.
The EV9 actually looks slightly better, with a 41.8% drop from 11,486 units sold up until July 2024 to 6,675 units sold so far this year. However, somehow, the brand is still having a great year overall thanks to its gasoline-powered options.
The K5 is booming in sales with over 40,000 units sold. The Carnival minivan’s sales are up 52.4% year-over-year, with 39,080 units sold so far in 2025. Telluride, Sorento, and K4 are also selling well. Finally, the Sportage is a massive hit, with over 101,000 units sold this year, contributing to Kia’s 8.3% growth year-to-date.
Eric Watson, Vice President of Sales Operations for Kia America, stated, “Kia is steadily progressing toward an all-time annual sales and market share record, fueled by record-breaking consumer sales growth.”
He added, “With our SUV lineup maintaining double-digit monthly growth, we recently launched a new advertising campaign for the 2026 Sportage, which offers the perfect blend of performance and functionality. As Kia’s longest-running nameplate, our customers have a strong affinity for Sportage, and we’re fostering a similar connection between our customers and our other models.”
At this point, the brand might shift its focus more towards gasoline-powered options as, barring any surprises, the electric vehicle business doesn’t seem poised to match last year’s performance.
