Luxury and supercar automakers have long struggled with how to keep their most coveted vehicles in the hands of true enthusiasts rather than speculators who buy and quickly flip them for a profit. Lamborghini’s recent lawsuit illustrates just how complex this issue is.

According to the lawsuit, the Italian brand accused Gold Coast Exotic Imports, an Illinois-based dealer, of contractual breach by selling dozens of cars to brokers and dealers instead of directly to customers. While the buying and selling of premium cars is not uncommon, Lamborghini seemed to have reached its limit.

The case has been ongoing since 2024 but may soon be resolved through an out-of-court settlement. According to Lamborghini, their agreement with Gold Coast only permitted sales to individual customers or other authorized dealers.

In one instance, the dealer told Lamborghini they had sold cars to the director of an orthopedic clinic in Minnesota and a former professional athlete in Chicago. In reality, these cars were allegedly sold to intermediaries.

In another case, a Lamborghini was reportedly sold to a person “who had previously pleaded guilty in a criminal fraud case involving the sale of luxury cars to drug dealers.”

Lamborghini identified 32 transactions since 2023 where Gold Coast Exotic Imports sold cars to non-retail customers. Since 2019, Lamborghini claims to have paid this dealer over $4 million in incentive bonuses.

They also accused the dealer of requesting “off-the-books payments from customers amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars… in exchange for agreeing to sell exclusive limited-edition models to these customers.”

Gold Coast Exotic Imports denied the allegations but was unsuccessful in its attempt to dismiss the lawsuit. The dealer argued that Lamborghini withheld hundreds of thousands of dollars meant for showroom improvements, didn’t reimburse marketing expenses, and claimed that Lamborghini wanted to oust Gold Coast Exotic Imports’ chairman, 81-year-old Joseph Perillo Sr.

Speaking to the media, Federal Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer stated that the two parties are discussing a viable settlement. The dealer’s attorney further added that “the parties are working closely together to resolve all claims, including those pending before the Illinois Motor Vehicle Review Board.”
