The story of the original Dodge Black Ghost dates back to the 1970s, right in the heart of the vibrant street racing scene of Detroit.
By day a police officer and by night a street racer, Godfrey Qualls owned a 1970 Challenger R/T SE equipped with a 426 HEMI (7.0-liter) engine.
The American muscle car Dodge Challenger Black Ghost, produced in 2023, has never been used
He gained fame on Detroit’s Woodward Avenue, dominating the street races. After each such event, he would mysteriously disappear, only to reappear a few months later, earning him the nickname “Black Ghost.”
He vanished entirely in 1977 when he joined the Army National Guard, underwent Special Forces training, and earned his Green Beret in the late ’70s, serving in the Guard until 2002.
Godfrey Qualls was never arrested for street racing. He retired from the Detroit Police Department in 2007 after 37 years of service. His Challenger was last registered and insured for street use on March 19, 1976.
The car was entered into the historical vehicle registry in 2020, after being restored by Godfrey’s son, Gregory. Gregory discovered his father’s street racing history after his passing. The historical vehicle registry aims to preserve and celebrate America’s automotive culture.
In May 2023, the car sold for an astonishing $1 million, becoming the third most expensive 1970 Challenger ever offered for sale. The most expensive one sold at auction for $1.8 million in 2016, followed by one that sold for $1.4 million three years later.
This story inspired Dodge to launch a special edition Black Ghost, modeled after the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, with a limited production run of just 300 units. This car is one of those 300.
Just 51 miles. That’s the reading on the odometer of this 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost as of 2025. Clearly, the person who bought it two years ago has kept it garaged, sheltered from the elements, and resisted the temptation to take it out on the racetrack to enjoy its performance.
The 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI engine under the hood must have been itching to get back on the road, delivering its 807 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque with a dramatic roar.
This car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. As for top speed, Dodge has never released any information about this aspect. It features an 8-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive.
This car boasts the impressive Black Ghost Special Edition package. This is a high-priced option, designed to enhance the already formidable appearance of this machine.
This package delivers a unique look. The car is finished in a black metallic tone, with a black interior trimmed in leather and Alcantara. Original plastic remains on the driver’s seat and steering wheel. It rides on 20-inch Satin Carbon Warp Speed wheels.
As expected, with such negligible mileage, this limited-edition 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Black Ghost remains as new as the day it left the factory and is seeking an owner who will appreciate its capabilities.
