The massive, long, and luxurious BYD YangWang U8L has officially launched in the Chinese market, and it’s certainly not cheap. However, compared to what customers typically pay for premium SUVs in the US and other Western markets, it’s still a bargain.
First unveiled a few months ago, the U8L is essentially a stretched version of the standard U8 introduced a few years ago, with one major difference: it’s significantly longer. The body has been extended by 372 mm, and the wheelbase has grown by 200 mm.
Pricing starts at 1.3 million Chinese yuan, which is approximately $181,000 at current exchange rates. Interested buyers can place a deposit of 20,000 yuan, or about $2,790.
BYD YangWang U8L: A Media Sensation with Monstrous Power, Water-Wading Capability, and…
Positioned as the flagship model in the YangWang range, the U8L is a domestic alternative to the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan for Chinese customers who prefer locally-made vehicles. While it may struggle to compete in terms of quality or prestige, the U8L boasts technology that no European rival can match.
For instance, the U8L is equipped with the company’s DiPilot 600 autonomous driving function, which includes three LiDAR sensors and provides Navigate On Autopilot functionality on highways and urban roads. It also comes standard with carbon-ceramic brakes, the YangWang-exclusive Disus-P hydraulic suspension system, and a water-wading mode similar to the standard version. This means the vehicle can float and move on water.
Now, let’s talk about the cabin. The U8L is exclusively offered in a 2+2+2 configuration, focusing on comfort and technology for passengers. It features a 23.6-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver, a 12.8-inch central infotainment screen, and another 23.6-inch screen for the front passenger. Both the first and second rows of seats come with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, along with heated armrests for added comfort.
The powertrain is identical to that of the YangWang U8. This means it’s equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, four electric motors, and a 49.05 kWh battery pack. This powertrain combination delivers a maximum output of 1,180 horsepower (880 kW) and a staggering 944 lb-ft (1,280 Nm) of torque.
To put that into perspective, Carscoops compares the Chinese SUV to the original Bugatti Veyron (2005-2015), which produced 987 horsepower from its 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine.
