According to Carscoops, the Toyota RAV4 has officially reclaimed the top spot in global auto sales, a year after conceding the lead to the Tesla Model Y.
This information comes from analyst Felipe Munoz, who compiled global auto sales data for 2024 by model.
Munoz’s method involved gathering information from various sources, including national statistics offices, dealer associations, customs data, specialized websites, blogs, and estimates from other analysts.
The ranking of the best-selling cars in 2024, according to Munoz, is based on sales data from 153 markets, accounting for approximately 99% of total car sales worldwide.
With a global sales figure of 1.187 million units in 2024, the Toyota RAV4 and its “twin” model, the Wildlander (exclusive to the Chinese market), narrowly edged out the Tesla Model Y to reclaim the top spot. The Model Y sold 1.185 million units worldwide.
Despite coming in second to the RAV4, the Tesla Model Y maintained its position as the best-selling electric car globally in the previous year. According to Carscoops, sales of the Model Y have shown signs of slowing down in early 2025.

The Toyota Corolla Cross, with sales of 859,000 units worldwide, was the third best-selling car in 2024. Carscoops attributes this success to its availability in multiple markets.
Following closely behind is the Honda CR-V/Breeze (854,000 units), while the Toyota Corolla/Levin Sedan (697,000 units) completes the top 5 best-selling cars globally for 2024.
With 617,000 units sold globally, the Toyota Hilux was the best-selling pickup truck of the previous year. The Ford F-150, with 595,000 units sold, was the second best-selling truck and seventh overall in the 2024 rankings, as per Felipe Munoz.
Despite a market trend favoring crossovers and SUVs, sedans like the Toyota Camry (593,000 units), Tesla Model 3 (560,000 units), and BYD Qin (502,000 units) still made their way into the top 10 best-selling cars of 2024.
