Mercedes-Benz celebrates the production of its 600,000th G-Class, marking a historic milestone in the over 40-year evolution of this iconic SUV.
This significant vehicle is the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ, completed at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria.
The G-Class was initially designed for military use but has been commercially available since 1979. Over time, this pure off-roader has evolved into one of the most luxurious icons in the SUV segment, with a global fan base. A recent highlight was the “Stronger Than the 1980s” edition – the 500,000th G-Class, launched in 2023.
Not only has the G-Class maintained its momentum over decades, but it has also continuously adapted to the growing trend of personalization among premium customers. Since 2019, Mercedes-Benz has offered the Manufaktur program exclusively for the G-Class, allowing customers to customize their vehicles. According to the brand, over 90% of customers now choose at least one personalization option when ordering their G-Class, with an average of three options per vehicle. Starting in 2024, the program expanded to offer over 20,000 paint color options, from classic shades to exclusive colors inspired by historical Mercedes models.
Alongside the S-Class and E-Class, the G-Class is one of Mercedes-Benz’s three longest-running production lines. Despite the automotive world’s changes, the G-Class stays true to its core values: a separate ladder-frame chassis, permanent all-wheel drive, three differential locks, and an unmistakable angular design. Iconic features such as round headlights, externally mounted spare wheels, and side-opening rear doors remain… a testament to its unique character, refusing to follow the crowd.
The G580 EQ introduced in 2024 proves the G-Class’s ability to adapt to the electric era. While embracing new technology, this legendary SUV retains its robust character and distinct “off-road” style, rightfully earning its place as an enduring icon in the luxury automotive world.
