According to data from the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office’s Industrial Property Official Gazette No. 448, Part A – Volume 2, Indian automaker TVS Motors has filed for industrial design protection for a new motorcycle model.

This is likely the company’s upcoming affordable electric motorcycle, touted as one of TVS’s most breakthrough products in recent years.

Notably, this model hasn’t even been introduced in India, TVS’s domestic market. The current images are digital renditions from the registration file, indicating a proactive step to protect the design before its international launch, including in Vietnam.

This new electric motorcycle is expected to be named the TVS Orbiter. It features a rather boxy design with a simple yet practical approach, targeting the mass market. The Orbiter has its headlight positioned above the handlebar cowl, accompanied by a small sun visor, while a long LED strip serves as a daytime running light and turn signal at the front and rear.

The front wheel appears larger than the rear, possibly a 14-inch front setup, paired with a smaller rear wheel to optimize seat height and under-seat storage capacity. The flat and extended seat, along with a spacious footboard, make it suitable for daily urban commuting.

Notably, the absence of an exhaust pipe and external engine suggests that this could be a fully electric motorcycle.

Speculations suggest that the TVS Orbiter might feature a mid-mounted motor with belt drive to the rear wheel, providing better balance and a smoother ride than common hub motors in many entry-level electric motorcycles. The rear twin shock absorbers further emphasize its practical and comfortable riding experience.

According to Indian media, the TVS Orbiter is likely to be equipped with a 2.2kWh battery, offering a range of approximately 90-95 km per charge, suitable for daily urban commutes.

In terms of pricing, this electric motorcycle is expected to fall in the range of VND 25-30 million, a competitive yet promising segment.

While all signs point to an electric vehicle, some speculate that TVS might launch an internal combustion engine version for international markets, especially Vietnam, where they currently only distribute gasoline-powered vehicles. This possibility exists as developing dual variants (electric and gasoline) on a single design platform is a prevalent trend among Asian motorcycle manufacturers.

However, with Vietnam’s push for green transportation, TVS may choose the country as one of the first markets to introduce their electric motorcycle line, especially considering the affordable price point and practical design that cater to a wide range of users.

Currently, TVS offers various gasoline-powered motorcycles in Vietnam, priced mostly between VND 25-36 million. Nonetheless, this pricing strategy hasn’t solidified TVS’s position in the Vietnamese market against established competitors like Honda and Yamaha.
