According to InsideEVs, Volvo has introduced ballistic-protected
versions of its XC90 and XC60 plug-in hybrid SUVs. The armored XC90, despite
weighing 320 kg more, can still be driven up to 67 km purely on electric power,
as per the WLTP cycle. This is only about 3 km less than the standard XC90 T8.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain in the armored XC90 retains its 455 horsepower and
709 Nm of torque. To accommodate the increased weight, Volvo has reinforced the
chassis, equipped more efficient brakes, and fitted 20-inch load-bearing wheels.
The Swedish automaker assures that the armored XC60 and XC90 will offer a driving
experience similar to their standard counterparts. From the outside, it is nearly
impossible to tell if an XC60 or XC90 has been upgraded with ballistic protection.
InsideEVs reports that the armored XC90 still features sensors, radar, and
cameras as standard, and drivers do not need a special license to operate the
vehicle. While anyone can purchase an armored XC90, Volvo states that this model is
not intended for the general public.
“To ensure Volvo Car complies with trade sanction regulations or export control
laws, all customers purchasing a Volvo armored car must undergo a vetting and
screening process to determine if an end-use or end-user license is needed,” the
Swedish company said.

Per InsideEVs, the production process for the armored XC90 begins with a
standard vehicle. The SUV is then disassembled and scanned using 3D scanners. The
scans are used to create custom-made armored parts that can be integrated into the
original structure without altering the vehicle’s appearance.
Multiple layers of aramid—a material used in bulletproof vests—are reinforced
around the body and on the roof. Various custom-made stainless steel parts are also
added throughout.
All glass is replaced with multilayer ballistic-resistant glass, which Volvo
claims does not compromise any of the car’s safety features. However, the rear
hatch of the armored XC90 will not open to ensure safety.
According to Volvo, their armored vehicles are certified to NIJ IIIA and VPAM 2009
ballistic protection standards. Volvo states that they are the only automaker in
the market to offer both these standards on factory-built armored cars.
Moreover, since the armored XC90 and XC60 are produced directly by Volvo, they
benefit from the same warranty and after-sales services as their standard
counterparts.
