According to sources, Nissan is planning to revive the Xterra SUV to compete with off-road giants such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and the Toyota 4Runner.

The new Nissan Xterra is expected to launch in 2028, likely featuring a V6 hybrid powertrain, possibly a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with an all-electric range of around 120 km, similar to a mini electric car.

Nissan plans to manufacture the new Xterra at its Canton plant in Mississippi, USA, where the Frontier/Navara pickup truck is also assembled. The Xterra will likely share the body-on-frame platform with the Frontier, promising exceptional off-road capabilities.

First introduced in 1999, the Nissan Xterra went through two generations over 16 years before being discontinued in 2015. With the growing popularity of off-road SUVs, particularly the success of the Toyota 4Runner, Nissan has decided to bring back the Xterra to fill a gap in its product lineup.

Currently, Nissan’s only body-on-frame SUV in the US market is the Armada. However, the Armada is larger, more expensive, and only recently added an off-road version. Therefore, the Xterra is expected to be a more affordable and capable option for off-road enthusiasts.

From now until spring 2027, Nissan intends to introduce 20 new vehicles and updated models in the US and Canadian markets. Notably, this includes the Infiniti Q50 sedan, powered by a 400-horsepower V6 twin-turbo engine shared with the Nissan Z sports car. Additionally, Nissan is expanding its hybrid offerings and preparing to launch an affordable electric crossover based on the Leaf.
