The Ultimate Driving Machine: BMW Acquires Renowned Tuner, Along with a New Logo

In a recent development, BMW, after acquiring Alpina in 2022, has filed to trademark a new logo for the renowned German tuning house.

According to Motor1, BMW signed an agreement to take over the tuning company Alpina in 2022. The German automaker is beginning to assert its control, recently filing for a trademark for a new logo for the tuning brand – deemed flatter and less visually appealing.

This will be the first time in over two decades that Alpina has had a new logo. The most notable change is the absence of the distinctive red-and-white shield. The throttle butterfly and crankshaft icons remain but are now enclosed in a simple circle, mimicking the BMW logo’s shape.

The new Alpina logo design is streamlined in a modern trend, using only black and white colors, with the font adjusted for increased height and sharpness.

The registration filing – first spotted by CarBuzz – listed intended uses, including automobiles, commercial information, as well as parts and accessories services. This suggests that the new brand identity may not only appear on future Alpina vehicles but also on other products. However, it is still unclear what those products might be.

When the merger agreement was announced, BMW stated that Alpina would continue to manufacture tuned vehicles until the end of 2025, after which it would begin offering restoration services while expanding its service business.

BMW believes that operating a small-scale independent car manufacturer would be challenging due to tightening emissions regulations and safety standards. The acquisition will allow the Alpina brand to continue its legacy in the market.

Alpina has been in business since 1965, specializing in tuning and racing BMW vehicles before producing complete cars. According to Motor1, Alpina’s production at the Buchloe factory will cease by the end of this year, but service, parts, and accessories operations will continue at this location.
