The renowned German automaker has announced plans to unveil an all-new SUV with an internal combustion engine in 2028. This vehicle will serve as a replacement for the first-generation Macan and will bear a distinct name.
Porsche discontinued sales of the gasoline-powered Macan in Europe last year due to its failure to comply with the General Safety Regulation (GSR2) that came into force in July 2024. While the SUV is still available in markets that do not adhere to GSR2, its production will come to a complete halt by 2026. Thereafter, a new crossover with an internal combustion engine will emerge.
According to CEO Oliver Blume, the new SUV will embody the essence of Porsche and differentiate itself from the electric Macan. He confirmed that the vehicle will be launched within the next three years, specifically in 2028, and emphasized the company’s efforts to expedite the development process to meet this timeline.
Although not explicitly mentioned, it is likely that Porsche will utilize the Volkswagen Group’s PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture to expedite development. This platform is also shared with the new Audi Q5. The previous-generation Macan and Q5 also utilized the same MLB platform.
The Audi Q5 offers a diverse range of engine options, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and even a mild-hybrid V6 engine in the SQ5, generating 362 horsepower. While Porsche has not confirmed the specific configurations for their new SUV, they have asserted that a diesel option will not be among them, aligning with the brand’s decision to discontinue diesel engines since 2018 in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal.
Despite the absence of any prototype sightings, Porsche assures that the design will bear the brand’s distinctive styling cues and remain within the same segment as the Macan. However, the Macan nameplate will be exclusively reserved for the second-generation electric SUV from 2026 onward.
Initially, Porsche had no intentions of developing any new gasoline-powered vehicles, opting instead to focus solely on the electric Macan. However, the slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles prompted the company to revise its strategy and reintroduce internal combustion engines into its lineup.
