According to Motor1, Maserati is going through a challenging phase. 2024 sales took a hit, and rumors of a potential sale by Stellantis have not entirely subsided. However, if the Italian marque can regain its growth trajectory, a flagship model bearing the Maserati badge and equipped with a manual transmission could arrive as early as next year.

Details about Maserati’s new supercar are still scarce. In a conversation with Autocar, Davide Danesin, head of Maserati’s technical department, revealed that the brand could indeed introduce such a supercar sooner rather than later.

Mr. Danesin believes that there is still a clientele eager for “pure mechanical cars” and uninterested in electric propulsion. Maserati began the year by announcing the cancellation of plans for a fully electric MC20 due to low market demand. The Italian supercar maker, part of the Stellantis group, is not the only luxury car brand rethinking its electrification strategy.

Some automakers have committed to continuing gasoline engine production after noticing a slowdown in electric vehicle demand in certain markets. Even Lamborghini may abandon its fully electric supercar plans, opting for a plug-in hybrid drivetrain instead.

“When producing a pure mechanical car, it makes sense to offer a manual transmission with a traditional gear lever. This strategy aligns with our brand, approach, and mindset. To be honest, I think Maserati will do this one day,” Mr. Danesin shared with Autocar.

The new Maserati model is expected to be based on the GranTurismo, featuring the Nettuno V6 twin-turbo engine with a displacement of 3.0L. This powerplant generates 621 horsepower in the new MCPura, but it could be tuned for even more performance if featured in a limited-edition model.

Maserati’s current challenges remain. Before his resignation last year, former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares stated that the group would decide the fate of 14 brands, including Maserati, by 2025. Maserati seems to have a narrow window to prove its worth. However, the leadership’s move to spark interest in the Italian supercar brand without mentioning electric motors or batteries is noteworthy.
