With a stable financial backing finally secured after multiple ownership changes, McLaren is poised for an exciting future.
As competitors like Ferrari prepare to launch their first electric vehicles in 2026, this British supercar maker has charted a unique course, prioritizing traditional and hybrid engines before venturing further into electrification.
Earlier this year, Nick Collins officially took the helm as CEO of McLaren, following the acquisition and merger of the company with Forseven by Abu Dhabi-based investment group, VYVN Holdings. VYVN also holds a significant stake in Nio (China) and owns Gordon Murray Technologies, opening up potential technology collaboration avenues for McLaren.
Speaking at the Monterey Car Week 2025, Collins affirmed, “McLaren will remain committed to internal combustion and hybrid engines for the long haul.” This means the iconic V8 4.0L twin-turbo engine, synonymous with McLaren’s power, isn’t going anywhere, despite the recent shift to a V6 3.0L PHEV engine in the Artura model.
Moreover, the company will continue to enhance its V8 engine for the McLaren W1 hypercar. This engine alone boasts an impressive 928 horsepower, and when combined with a hybrid system, the total output surges to a staggering 1,275 horsepower. Collins revealed that this V8 powerhouse will be a mainstay in multiple new products over the coming years.
Regarding electric vehicle plans, the CEO hinted that any potential launch would likely be market-specific, such as China, where electric vehicle demand is surging. During the merger announcement with Forseven, VYVN emphasized that McLaren would “benefit from its investment in Nio to access advanced electrification technology.”
Collins also teased that “the new McLarens of the next era will arrive sooner than you think.” He assured that projects initiated before the merger would continue to receive funding, promising a vibrant phase for the iconic British supercar brand.
