In the first sales report of Q3, Vietnam’s pickup truck segment saw a slight shift. The Ford Ranger remains at the top, but the second position in sales statistics is no longer held by the Mitsubishi Triton.

Surprising Rise of Toyota Hilux

Positive sales trends dominated the pickup truck segment in July, with three out of four models showing growth. This led to a total of 2,302 pickups sold in Vietnam during the first month of Q3.

Toyota Hilux saw a significant increase, reaching 390 units sold. This impressive performance made Hilux the second most popular pickup among Vietnamese buyers in July, surpassing Mitsubishi Triton.

This marks only the second time this year that Toyota Hilux has secured the second spot in Vietnam’s pickup sales. For most of the year, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton have been the top choices for Vietnamese customers.

In the same period, Mitsubishi sold 272 Triton pickups to Vietnamese customers, making it the only pickup model to experience a sales decline in July.

Ford Ranger continues to dominate the pickup segment with its second consecutive month of sales growth, reaching 1,598 units. This achievement is double what all its Japanese competitors achieved combined.

Since the Mazda BT-50’s temporary withdrawal, Isuzu D-Max is gradually replacing its fellow Japanese competitor at the bottom of the sales chart. In July, Isuzu D-Max sold 42 units, remaining the lowest-selling pickup in the VAMA-tracked group.

Year-to-date, Ford Ranger sales in Vietnam reached 9,383 units, significantly outpacing all Japanese pickups. After seven months, Mitsubishi Triton sold 2,088 units, Toyota Hilux achieved 1,863 units, and Isuzu D-Max recorded 297 units.

Early Resolution

Although Vietnam’s auto market has just entered August, the pickup segment’s outcome seems almost predetermined.

Ford Ranger is set to maintain its lead, while Isuzu D-Max is likely to remain the slowest-selling pickup in Vietnam. The remaining positions may see minor shifts, similar to the recent report.

With 9,383 units sold in seven months, Ford Ranger is among the top two best-selling internal combustion engine vehicles in Vietnam, second only to the Mitsubishi Xpander. If it maintains its current strong sales, Ford Ranger could become Vietnam’s best-selling gasoline/diesel vehicle in 2025.

One reason for Ford Ranger’s dominance in the pickup segment is its diversity. Including the Raptor variant, Ford Ranger offers seven different versions, priced between 707 million VND and 1.299 billion VND.

The new generation Mitsubishi Triton offers three versions, priced from 655 million to 924 million VND. Toyota Hilux provides three versions in Vietnam, ranging from 668 million to 999 million VND, while Isuzu D-Max has five versions priced between 650 million and 880 million VND.

As the only American mid-size pickup, Ford Ranger frequently appears on monthly promotion lists. In this segment, only Mitsubishi Triton matches Ford Ranger in terms of promotional frequency.

In August, Vietnamese customers purchasing Ford Ranger Sport and Wildtrak versions receive a 100% registration fee discount, equivalent to 86.4 million VND for Sport and 98.6 million VND for Wildtrak.

Ford Ranger XLS 4×2 and 4×4 versions offer a 50% registration fee discount, valued at 35.4-38.8 million VND. The Raptor variant also receives a similar discount, worth approximately 65 million VND.

For Mitsubishi Triton, August buyers receive a 50% registration fee support and additional gifts depending on the version. The promotion ranges from 30 million VND for the 2WD AT GLX version to 38 million VND for the 4WD AT Athlete version.
