In the rugged world of off-road vehicles, certain names have achieved legendary status. The Mitsubishi Montero, known as the Pajero in many markets, is undoubtedly one of them. During the 1980s and 1990s, the Montero left an indelible mark on the Dakar Rally and became a favorite among adventure enthusiasts.

After a two-decade absence in the U.S. and a hiatus in other markets, this iconic Japanese SUV may be poised for a comeback. Recent spy shots of a prototype suggest that a new generation of the Montero or Pajero is under development, with an anticipated debut before the end of 2025.

While Mitsubishi has yet to confirm the revival of the Montero, the company has promised several new models in the coming years and re-registered the Montero trademark last year. However, it remains uncertain whether the new model will be available in the U.S.

Despite this, numerous indicators point to Mitsubishi’s intention to resurrect this off-road icon.

Based on the spy photos, the new Montero retains its signature boxy design. Drawing inspiration from the DST and Destinator concepts, the vehicle boasts a robust exterior, a large honeycomb grille, vertical LED headlights, and prominent skid plates. Its high body, square windows, and upright rear glass with horizontal taillights reminiscent of the Nissan Patrol evoke the classic Montero aesthetic.

The European test mule features six-lug wheels and a solid rear axle, confirming the use of a body-on-frame construction ideal for off-road performance.

If introduced in Europe, a hybrid variant is almost certain. This could include either a 2.4L PHEV engine producing 302 horsepower, similar to the Outlander, or a 1.5L E-Power hybrid with 190 horsepower, akin to the Nissan Qashqai. All-wheel drive will likely be standard.

Mitsubishi has not announced a launch date for the new Montero/Pajero, but the presence of prototypes suggests a possible European debut as early as next year. In the U.S., the return of the Montero name remains uncertain.

In 2024, Mitsubishi unveiled its “Momentum 30” plan, promising at least one new model annually from 2026, including a teaser for an off-road SUV. If all goes well, the Montero could be part of this exciting lineup.
