The Story of a South Korean Youth Facing Severe Penalties for Drunk Driving Captivates Online Communities

The offender is a 25-year-old man residing in Daejeon. The incident occurred in January this year in the parking lot of a villa complex. After drinking with friends, he decided to rest in his car until he sobered up.

However, while sitting in the car, he accidentally started the engine and moved the vehicle about 1 meter. This seemingly harmless action was noticed by patrolling traffic police.

Upon inspection, the police recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.127%, double the legal limit in South Korea, resulting in the suspension of his driver’s license.

The case was swiftly brought to trial. After deliberation, the court fined the young man 5 million won (approximately $3,800 USD). The judge stated that despite the short distance traveled, driving under the influence of alcohol remains a serious violation, especially with a blood alcohol level far exceeding the legal limit.

This ruling sparked significant debate on South Korean social media. Some argued the penalty was excessive for the actual behavior, while others supported it, emphasizing the necessity of strict laws to deter violations and ensure road safety.
