Romanian car brand Dacia has unveiled the Hipster, a prototype affordable electric vehicle targeting urban commuters seeking compact, cost-effective, and eco-friendly transportation.

Priced under €15,000 (approximately $16,500), the Hipster is poised to challenge Chinese dominance in the small electric vehicle segment.

Dacia confirms the Hipster Concept could enter production if the European Union (EU) approves a new category for ultra-compact vehicles, defined as cars under 3,000 mm in length and 800 kg in weight. For context, Europe’s shortest current model, the Leapmotor T03, measures 3,620 mm.

The Hipster features a boxy, three-door design, with a top speed of 56 mph and a 93-mile range—ideal for short urban trips. Dacia highlights that the average European car travels less than 25 miles daily at 35 mph, making these specs practical.

To minimize costs, Dacia strips away luxuries: canvas seats, manual windows, zippered doors, and a single color option—slate blue.

The interior retains Dacia’s utilitarian ethos, offering 11 accessory mounts for cup holders, lights, and more. A smartphone serves as both digital key and infotainment hub, connecting to portable Bluetooth speakers. The car includes a digital instrument cluster and dual airbags.

The Hipster aligns with Renault (Dacia’s parent) and Stellantis’ push for EU regulatory reforms. Their goal: simplify safety standards, reduce weight and costs, while maintaining urban mobility requirements.

Dacia notes European car prices surged 63% from 2001–2020, underscoring demand for affordable EVs. However, EU approval may mandate local production to ensure quality and jobs.
