Kia has sparked excitement online with its innovative electric vehicle promotion—a car air freshener that smells like gasoline. This unique accessory, launched in Finland, aims to ease the transition to electric driving with a playful, nostalgic twist.

In a social media post, Kia unveiled the miniature gas can-shaped freshener, designed to hang from the rearview mirror, alongside the message:

“Miss the scent of gasoline and fuel pumps in the era of electrification? We’ve got the perfect fix for your ‘gas withdrawal symptoms.'”

According to Kia, this limited-edition item will be gifted to the first buyers of the Kia EV4, a new all-electric hatchback poised to compete with Tesla and Volkswagen in the C-segment EV market.

Tyyliniekka reports that the concept originated from Kia’s Finnish importer, Astara Auto Finland, in collaboration with perfumer Max Perttula, who crafted the “uniquely authentic” scent.

The freshener blends base notes of motor oil and metal with accents of jasmine and birch tar, evoking “the ambiance of an auto repair shop,” as described by Perttula.

While not everyone may want a gasoline-scented accessory in their new EV, Kia’s campaign is praised for its clever marketing. It effectively captures attention while tapping into the nostalgia of drivers transitioning from gas to electric vehicles, who often miss the sensory experience of traditional engines.

“Smoke signals are a thing of the past. Test drive the fully electric Kia EV4 and embrace a smoke-free journey—in just minutes!”
