At the Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2025, Toyota has confirmed the unveiling and launch of two brand-new fully electric vehicles, marking a significant stride in its electrification strategy for the Southeast Asian market.

Scheduled for November in Jakarta, Indonesia, GJAW 2025 is one of the region’s largest automotive events, bringing together international brands focused on electric vehicles and low-emission technologies. As the leading automotive brand in Indonesia, Toyota is set to reinforce its pioneering position by introducing two all-new EV models.

While specifics remain undisclosed, industry experts speculate that these models are likely the Toyota bZ4X, a mid-size electric SUV introduced in Indonesia last year, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, a compact electric SUV developed in collaboration with Suzuki.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has confirmed that the bZ4X will be locally assembled at its Karawang plant in West Java. This strategic move aims to reduce import costs, optimize the supply chain, and enhance price competitiveness. Local production also qualifies the bZ4X for Indonesia’s Low Carbon Emission Vehicle (LCEV) program, offering significant tax incentives. Toyota targets a 40% local component ratio for the vehicle in its initial phase.

Achieving this localization level allows the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) version of the bZ4X to benefit from ASEAN tax incentives, paving the way for exports to neighboring markets, including Vietnam. Previously showcased as a concept in Vietnam, the bZ4X’s Indonesian production could accelerate its official launch in the Vietnamese market. In Europe, the bZ4X features front-wheel drive with battery options of 57.7 kWh and 73.1 kWh, delivering a range of 444–568 km (WLTP). It targets eco-conscious consumers seeking practicality for daily commuting.

The Urban Cruiser EV, a joint Toyota-Suzuki project, is also expected to debut at GJAW 2025. Positioned as a compact electric SUV, it slightly exceeds the dimensions of the Toyota Yaris Cross. The Urban Cruiser EV is rumored to offer 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery options, delivering 144–174 hp and a maximum range of approximately 400 km. This positions it as a competitive choice in the urban EV segment, rivaling models like the BYD Dolphin, MG4 Electric, and Hyundai Kona EV.

Toyota’s EV assembly strategy in Indonesia targets both domestic demand and regional exports. Leveraging Indonesia’s manufacturing network enables the company to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles in ASEAN, especially as governments, including Vietnam, accelerate green transition initiatives.

GJAW 2025 is poised to be a pivotal event for Toyota and the regional automotive industry, as more manufacturers establish Indonesia as a strategic EV production hub.
