According to the plan, BYD will officially unveil its special K-Car model at the Japan Mobility Show 2025.
BYD K-Car is an electric vehicle specifically developed for the Japanese market. Adhering to the Kei-car standards, the vehicle measures a maximum of 3.4 meters in length, 1.48 meters in width, and under 2 meters in height, with an engine capacity not exceeding 670cc. This segment holds a unique position in Japan’s automotive industry, capturing approximately 38% of the domestic market share in 2024, thanks to its compact design, fuel efficiency, and low operating costs.
BYD’s new Kei car features a compact, boxy design with a distinctly practical aesthetic. It is equipped with sliding doors for easier access in tight urban spaces. Inside, the cabin boasts a floating digital instrument cluster and a large central touchscreen. The dual A-pillar design has been optimized to enhance the driver’s visibility.
Reports suggest that this mini electric vehicle is powered by a 20 kWh battery, offering an estimated range of 180 kilometers on a single charge. Additionally, it supports fast DC charging at 100 kW, significantly reducing charging times.
BYD is expected to price the new K-Car starting at around $17,000 (approximately 447.18 million VND), positioning it competitively below many Japanese domestic rivals in the same segment.
Historically, the Kei-car segment has been dominated by Japanese brands such as Nissan, Suzuki, and Daihatsu, with the Nissan Sakura leading in electric vehicle sales. BYD’s entry into this niche is not merely about launching a new model but signifies a strategic move to challenge established brands and showcase its technological prowess.
The debut of the BYD K-Car at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 marks a significant milestone, as it becomes the first foreign automaker to enter a segment considered a cornerstone of Japanese automotive culture. While this presents a considerable challenge, it also underscores BYD’s ambitious global aspirations.
