At 3:30 PM on November 17th, the prestigious five-digit license plate 51B-888.88 from Ho Chi Minh City was listed for online auction by Vietnam Partnership Auction Company (VPA).
From the moment it appeared, this unique license plate captivated collectors and enthusiasts of rare license plates.
After the official bidding period and multiple extensions, the plate was secured by a bidder for 3.26 billion VND, setting the highest price of the auction. The entire session lasted 25 minutes with a total of 10 extensions.
In Vietnamese culture, the number 8 is synonymous with prosperity and advancement, symbolizing wealth and success. Consequently, five-digit plates featuring the number 8 are highly coveted, considered among the most auspicious and valuable license plates. When paired with prefixes from major cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, their appeal and market value soar.
Prior to the auction, speculation on social media forums suggested the plate could fetch up to 10 billion VND. Thus, the final bid of 3.26 billion VND was seen as significantly lower than anticipated.
Recently, several five-digit plates with the number 8 have commanded staggering bids, some exceeding 20 billion VND. However, it’s common for winning bidders to default on payment, forcing these plates to be re-auctioned at substantially lower prices.
For instance, the plate 88A-888.88 (Phu Tho) initially sold for 21.325 billion VND but was forfeited, later re-auctioned for only 14.88 billion VND. Similarly, the plate 30K-888.88 (Hanoi) originally fetched 20.08 billion VND but was re-auctioned for just 8.2 billion VND.
