Cody Detwiler, widely known as WhistlinDiesel, a popular YouTuber, has recently found himself in legal trouble after being arrested by Tennessee state police.

The arrest stems from allegations of tax evasion related to his ownership of a Ferrari F8 Tributo.

The situation gained public attention when Detwiler posted a video showing the F8 Tributo engulfed in flames. The car’s Montana license plate in the video raised suspicions among authorities, suggesting Detwiler might have exploited Montana’s vehicle registration laws to evade taxes in his state of residence.

According to WKRN, Detwiler and his company, WhistlinDiesel LLC, are facing charges of sales tax evasion related to the purchase of the Ferrari.

The charges are based on Tennessee Code § 67-1-1440(g), which classifies the intentional evasion of taxes exceeding $500 as a Class E felony. Prosecutors allege that Detwiler violated this statute by failing to pay the required state taxes when purchasing the F8 Tributo.

The investigation focuses on the vehicle’s registration. It remains unclear whether authorities believe Detwiler never registered the Ferrari in Tennessee or intentionally registered it in Montana to avoid taxes. Montana is known for its tax-friendly policies, particularly for luxury car owners who establish LLCs to register their vehicles, saving tens of thousands of dollars in taxes. Notably, WhistlinDiesel LLC is also registered in Montana.

At the time of his arrest, Detwiler claimed he purchased the F8 Tributo solely for his popular car-destruction content, a niche that has made him both famous and controversial. However, regardless of the vehicle’s intended use, proper registration and tax compliance are mandatory. Tennessee authorities are reviewing all transaction records to determine if Detwiler deliberately exploited tax loopholes.

The arraignment scheduled for November 19 is expected to shed light on the allegations and the extent of Detwiler’s legal liability. This case highlights a growing trend among U.S. states to crack down on out-of-state vehicle registrations used to evade taxes, a practice increasingly common among luxury car enthusiasts.
