While Mercedes-Benz boasts numerous successful models, the G-Class stands as the most iconic in its current lineup.

Building on this success, Mercedes-Benz is now developing a smaller, more urban-friendly version. The development process is progressing smoothly, and media outlets have already spotted several prototypes undergoing initial testing.

Although electric vehicles haven’t yet made a significant impact in the off-road segment, automakers are diligently working to create the perfect electric off-roaders. A prime example is Jeep, which recently unveiled the Recon in the U.S., though its specifications and pricing remain uncertain. Rivian is also developing a compact crossover rumored to have off-road capabilities. Mercedes-Benz is the latest to join this trend, planning to launch a compact electric off-roader by 2027.

Few may know, but the German automaker is a pioneer in this segment, having produced one of the most iconic off-road vehicles: the G-Class. This boxy SUV is so exceptional that Mercedes-Benz has kept its design largely unchanged for 46 years, an industry record. Originally developed as a military vehicle, its origins are even more impressive than you might imagine.

Capitalizing on this legacy, Mercedes-Benz aims to introduce a smaller model, retaining the iconic boxy design and legendary off-road capabilities. Tentatively named the (little) G-Class or Mini G-Class, it’s likely that a different commercial name will be used for the production version. To envision what a compact G-Wagen might look like, imagine an extended Suzuki Jimny.

The Mini G-Class will feature an electric powertrain, bearing the EQ badge. However, it will not share the distinctive design elements of other electric models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. The German automaker has confirmed plans to experiment with a unified design for both combustion and electric vehicles, with the Mini G-Class being the first to adopt this new strategy.

Despite the cost implications, Mercedes-Benz has developed a dedicated platform exclusively for this model. In a September discussion with Road and Track, Mercedes-Benz engineers described the new platform as a “miniaturized ladder frame,” suggesting the compact G-Class will match the performance of its larger counterpart.

Images of the 2027 Mini Mercedes-Benz G-Class EQ on the road confirm its G-Class-inspired design. The camouflaged SUVs even feature a rear-mounted spare tire, a detail first seen in September when Mercedes teased the new model.

Several notable differences set it apart from its larger sibling, most notably its smaller size. It also features crescent-shaped daytime running lights that double as turn signals, whereas the G-Class has separate turn signals on the front fenders. The prototypes also include roof rails, a feature absent on the larger G-Class.
